No server-side filter, because there is no server.

The most common reason people leave a hosted character chat isn't price, it's a filter that changed. A model gets swapped, a policy tightens, and characters people had built long conversations with start refusing or behaving differently overnight. privstory can't do that to you, because the decision isn't ours to make.

Nothing is moderated in transit, because nothing is in transit

Server-side moderation works by inspecting messages as they pass through a service. privstory has no such pass, and could not add one: your messages go from the app to a model running on your own machine and back. There is no point in that path where anyone else sees them.

This is a structural property rather than a promise. There is no filter to be quietly turned on in a future update, because there is no channel through which a filter could see anything.

The module decides how a character behaves

What a character will and won't say comes from two things: the chat model doing the role-play, and the prompts that shaped the character. privstory bundles both into a module, along with the image model, and ships with none of its own.

That means behaviour is a choice you make when you pick a module, not a setting we impose. Build your own, import one someone else built, download its weights, and select it when you create a character. Each character stays bound to the module it was made with, so it keeps behaving the way it did when you made it.

Nothing changes underneath you

A hosted service can replace the model behind your favourite character without telling you, because the model is theirs. Here the weights are files on your disk. They don't change unless you change them.

The same is true of the app: it runs locally, so there's no server that can be switched off or repriced, and no update you're forced to take to keep talking to a character you've invested time in.

Which also makes it your responsibility

Removing an intermediary means removing whoever was making judgement calls on your behalf. privstory is intended for adults, and what you generate with it is yours to answer for under the law that applies to you.

Local operation is not a licence to produce material that is illegal to create or possess, sexual content involving minors above all, and anything else prohibited where you live. That nothing is transmitted does not make such content acceptable, and it is not what this software is for.

Common questions.

Does privstory moderate or filter my conversations?

There is no server-side moderation, because there is no server: your conversations never leave your machine. What a character will and won't say is set by the model and module you choose, and you are free to swap modules or build your own.

Can the filter change after I've built a character?

Not from our side. The model weights and prompts are files on your disk, and a character stays bound to the module it was created with. Behaviour changes only if you choose a different module.

Does that mean anything goes?

No. The absence of a server-side filter is a technical fact about where the model runs, not permission. privstory is for adults, illegal material is illegal regardless of where it was generated, and content involving minors is categorically off-limits.

Where do modules come from?

You build them or import them. A module is a shareable bundle of a chat model, an image model, and the prompts that generate characters and scenes. privstory ships with no character or scene generation of its own.
